Railway track or railroad track, also known as permanent way is the structure on a railway or railroad consisting of the rails, fasteners, sleepers (railroad ties in American English) and ballast (or slab track), plus the underlying subgrade.
Gauge¶
Distance between the inner faces of the two rails. Think of it as the widgth of the track, measured from the inside edges where wheel flanges run.
